Claim

Matthew’s Greek explicitly places Πέτρος (Peter) and πέτρα (rock) in a wordplay/cognate relationship. The grammatical gender difference is real, but by itself it does not settle whether the rock’s referent is Peter personally, Peter as confessor/representative, his confession, Christ, or a composite reading.

Note: Patristic and later interpreters demonstrably drew different referential conclusions from the same wording.

What this does not establish

The morphology alone does not prove or disprove papal succession.
The Greek wordplay does not authorize importing later offices into the verse.
